Postnatal Care

The weeks after birth can bring joy, tenderness and a great deal of change. While much of the attention turns to your newborn, your own recovery and wellbeing also deserve care.

Chinese medicine recognises that pregnancy, birth and early motherhood place considerable demands on a woman, both physically and emotionally. Postnatal care makes space for the mother as she recovers from birth and adjusts to life with her baby.

The Golden Month: a time for rest and recovery

The first month after birth is often referred to as the Golden Month. In traditional Chinese culture, this is regarded as an important time for rest, nourishment and support. Family and community traditionally help with meals and everyday responsibilities, allowing the mother time to recover and bond with her newborn.

Although a full month of rest may not be practical for every woman, the principle remains meaningful: accepting help, eating nourishing meals and allowing yourself time to recover without pressure to return quickly to your usual routine.

Supporting you after birth

I work with women during the early weeks after birth and beyond, with care tailored to your recovery, how you are feeling and the support you have around you.

We take time to discuss:

- Fatigue, disrupted sleep and opportunities for rest

- Neck, back or shoulder discomfort

- Digestive changes and constipation

- Night sweats

- Breastfeeding concerns

- Your emotional wellbeing and adjustment to motherhood

There is also space to talk about your birth experience and how you are finding these early weeks, whether you feel settled, overwhelmed or somewhere in between.

Your care may include acupuncture, dietary guidance and, where appropriate, Chinese herbal medicine. Any herbal recommendations take into account breastfeeding, medications and your individual circumstances.

Babies are welcome.
