Birth Preparation & Labour

The final weeks of pregnancy mark another transition as attention begins to turn towards labour, birth and meeting your baby.

From around 36 weeks, acupuncture may be incorporated as part of your preparation for birth. These appointments offer time to slow down, turn inward and support your physical and emotional wellbeing as labour approaches.

Treatment during these final weeks may focus on:

- Relaxation and reducing anxiety around birth

- Sleep and energy

- Lower back, hip and pelvic discomfort

- Digestive symptoms, including heartburn and reflux

- General comfort during late pregnancy

- Preparing physically and emotionally for labour

- Acupressure techniques for labour

- Preparing for the postpartum period

Rather than viewing preparation for birth as something that begins only when labour starts, these final weeks can provide an opportunity to gradually prepare the body and mind for the transition into birth and motherhood.

Acupressure for labour

Acupressure can also be incorporated into your preparation for labour. In the final weeks of pregnancy, I can show you and your birth partner simple acupressure techniques that may be used during labour alongside movement, breathing, massage and other comfort measures.

Learning these techniques beforehand gives your partner a practical way to be involved and allows you both time to become familiar with the points before labour begins.

When birth takes a different path

Birth does not always unfold in the way we initially imagine.

If you are preparing for a planned induction or Caesarean birth, or there are additional medical considerations during your pregnancy, acupuncture can still form part of your supportive care.

Treatment is adapted to your individual circumstances and works alongside the care and recommendations provided by your midwife, GP or obstetrician.

The wellbeing and safety of both mother and baby remain central throughout your care.
